Checking with Chumley's

Now and then, it's necessary to check in with poor old Chumley's.

Back in September, Eater reported they were applying for a liquor license. Before that, in March of 2009, a reader sent in this photo of the dormers being raised on the roof:



Things really seemed to be on track since the collapse in 2007 and the wreckage revealed in 2008:

So recently I made the mistake of sticking my lens in between the construction fencing. Here's the awful truth:

 VANISHED One of the greatest, and one of my favorites, has gone. After temporarily shuttering during the pandemic, Eisenberg's sandwich shop , near the Flatiron since 1929, has closed for good. A For Lease sign is in the window. I went by yesterday and talked with building manager Jackie Valiente who told me that she and the building owner would love to save Eisenberg's, but they need someone to take it over and keep it as it is. Zombie Urbanism

Jonny Aspen , Associate Professor at the Institute of Urbanism and Landscape in Oslo, Norway, coined the term " Zombie Urbanism " in 2013 to describe the way many urban environments are being designed today.
