Vanished 2011: Food

We lost many restaurants in 2011.

*Update: Regrettably, we add Polonia to the list, shuttered Christmas Eve after 22 years in the East Village.

*Update 2: We just learned that Auggie's Coffee shop on Thompson has closed after 45 years.

The city's red-sauce joints took more hits as Rocco Ristorante announced they'd be closing after 89 years due to a rent hike and takeover by the Torrisi chain. Rocky's Italian also announced their impending closure, also due to rent hike and takeover by a Nolitan called Balaboosta.



After 52 years in Little Italy, the original Ray's Pizza closed its doors. Less original, but also mourned, Famous Ray's in the Village shuttered.

We lost the second-to-last Andrews Coffee Shop and the Tramway Diner. Also vanished, Niko's on the Upper West Side.

Doyers Vietnamese was shuttered and recently became a trendy hipster spot.

And very quietly, without fanfare, two Latin places disappeared from Chelsea--Cabo Rojo off the High Line and the Cuban Chinese joint La Nueva Rampa.

What have I missed?

For some time, 8th Street has been a ghost town . The once-plentiful shoe stores and other small businesses that lined it have dropped like flies in recent years. Carmelita's Reception House

Some years ago, on the southwest corner of 14th St. and 3rd Ave. , above Disco Donut, there was a place called Carmelita's Reception House. Walter Grutchfield at 14to42 writes, "I'm not sure what it was, but Carmelita's Reception House dates from the late 1970s and derived from Carmelita for Bridal, Corp., (bridal gowns and such?) from the mid-1960s." Lori Horvitz recalls in her non-fiction story " The Last Days of Disco Donut ," "I thought Carmelita's was a massage parlor that doubled as a house of prostitution. Only years later did I find out it was a legitimate bar that frequently held parties for gay women ." Finding her beloved theater turned into a Sephora , Leslie Nipkow writes, "I want to sit in a theater seat and lose myself in somebody else’s imagination for a few hours. I want to be reminded that my world does not stop at the front of my face."
